Hear Mike “Rozz” Woloszyn’s show The Void, Wednesdays 6-7 PM.
1.Are you from Kamloops? If not, where are you from and how did you come to be in Kamloops?
I was born in Toronto, but grew up in Montreal.
2.Are you a student volunteer? If so, what are you studying and does volunteering at the station help with your studies?
I’m a faculty member here at TRU.
3.Are you a community volunteer? How do you think volunteering at the station supports your engagement with the Kamloops community?
Meeting people at the various functions and drives that I can help out with is always fun and engaging.
4.What is it about volunteering in general that appeals to you?
Helps me feel more connected to the community.
5.What other hobbies and interests do you have outside of doing campus/community radio?
Video games and hitting the gym less often than I should.
6.In what way are you contributing to CFBX as an off air volunteer? What do you enjoy about it?
I really enjoy the production side of things, where we are handed a raw interview and have to cut it into an hour-long feature, add in music, edit the conversation for time while keeping the interesting parts, and make it come together into something polished. So much fun, and you have a tangible product at the end to point at and say “I helped make that!”
7.What would you tell a prospective volunteer who is considering joining CFBX?
It’s the only place you can almost literally walk in off the street with no experience in radio and within a few weeks be on the air learning how to broadcast. It’s a lot of fun.
8.What does campus/community radio mean to you?
I’m sure you’re looking for some deep message about community connections and promoting independent artists and social/environmental causes worth championing. But deep down, I see the station as the last bastion of independent radio, where the music isn’t pre-programmed and repetitive (or, at least it isn’t as repetitive as commercial radio).
9.What shows at CFBX do you like and listen to regularly? Why do you enjoy them?
The Sesspool (Mondays, 7-8 PM) always plays stuff I like to hear. The Echoes of the Soul (Fridays 9-10 AM) is good when you want to hear someone say something affirming to get your day started. Other shows I will try to catch at least a part of when I have a radio on: Ska on the X (Wednesdays 7-8 PM) for a bit of nostalgia, Hello I’m Indie (Thursday 8-9 PM) because there’s some overlap in musical tastes, and Do Not Touch This Amp (Fridays, 8-9 PM), to hear what eclectic and out-there theme Steve has in store.
10.Name an artist you discovered through your time at CFBX that you’d like others to know about.
Spoils of Grace, an Industrial band from Kamloops, are flying under the radar, mostly because they don’t tour (it’s really a one-man band). Fantastic music from their debut album last year, reminiscent of NIN, Ministry, and Front Line Assembly.
11.Is there a local musician that you would like people to pay more attention to? Why?
See my previous answer.
12.Do you enjoy attending live concerts? Why? Can you tell us about your favorite live concert that you’ve been to?
I went to numerous concerts back in the day, but these days I’m less inclined largely due to the pricetag for bigger acts. So I confess that no, live concerts aren’t my thing anymore, other than the occasional night out listening to a cover band at the Grotto, or the Sun Peaks Retrofest.
13.What is your show about? What would a listener hear when they tune in?
The Void is an attempt to emulate a dark late-90s goth club atmosphere. The music is always on, the beat doesn’t stop, and talking is kept to a minimum. You will hear old classic as well as lesser-known recently released industrial, goth (I alternate the theme weekly), and variations therein (darkwave, EBM, etc).
14.What makes your show unique? Why do you think listeners are interested in your show?
You won’t hear most of the stuff I play anywhere else on the air, and the I like to think the ambiance and vibe created each week is fairly unique to other shows.
15.What do you hope to do with your show in the future? What direction do you see your show moving?
I don’t have any plans to expand at the moment, although incorporating some interviews and guest spots would be fun to try.
