I strolled through the Farmer’s Market on August 1 and found a couple of musicians entertaining the shoppers as they walked up and down the street getting their veggies, meats, coffees, bannock, pastries and other bread. I even noticed booths with beer and liquor samples. I’m always looking for music and was not disappointed. Kiefer James was playing his guitar and harmonica. As I strolled along I found someone playing her violin/fiddle on the south side of the street. A young woman named Naomi was serenading the folks with an uptempo tune called Swallowtail Jig. It had that down east flavour and was really enjoyable.

Later I went to hear Hickory Biscuit perform at Music in the Park. The band consists of Evan Wilds on lead vocals, guitar and keyboards, Jon Treichel on vocals and guitar, Neil Brun on bass and Craig MacKay on drums.

The talented foursome dipped into a variety of genres and admitted an affection for 90s music. They started off with some funky sounds including “We Got the Funk,” and “Play That Funky Music.” They morphed into Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” and Springstein’s “Glory Days.”

Later Treichel played the classic tune “Sleepwalk” on his lap steel.

They mixed in Jamiroquai’s “Cosmic Girl,” ZZ Tops “Cheap Sunglasses,” a U2 favourite and more. It was a nice evening and Hickory Biscuit took us on a funky fun night down memory lane.
