Annual Rally and Walk for Peace, Social Justice, and the Environment turns 50

On Saturday the 50th Annual Rally and Walk for Peace, Social Justice, and the Environment began on the grounds of, the now closed, Stuart Wood School. There were speeches, music performances and booths from local organizations. The “walk” was set up next to the Farmer’s Market and many people attended.

I braved the crowd and got a few photos of musicians and speakers. In the market area Keifer James played guitar and sang. He performed some rock and country tunes. One highlight was the Tragically Hip tune “Scared.” He told me that he has an album coming out in the near future.

Jared Doherty and his friend (below) jammed within his bakery booth, enjoying the beautiful day. Apparently sales of his tasty bread were brisk.

Over on the school grounds there was a combination of speakers and musical performances.

Ginny Ratsoy

Ginny Ratsoy of the Kamloops Adult Learners Society spoke of opportunities available with continuous learning.

George Johnson spoke of the history of the Kamloops Walk for Peace, Social Justice and Environment. Jim Cooperman also provided information.

Intensive Care

Johnson’s band Intensive Care did a set which included the song “Deck Chairs.” The song likens the way we treat our planet to moving deck chairs around on the Titanic.

It was a good start and the walk was still to follow. It is refreshing to know that this has now been going on for fifty years in Kamloops.
