Hailey Marshall is the host of Riff and Reverb. Hear her show every Wednesday from Noon to 1 PM.
1) Are you from Kamloops? If not, where are you from and how did you end up in Kamloops?
I’m actually not, I’m from Surrey, BC, so a little bit down south.I’m here for my school, I’m doing computer science, and this was kind of a fun thing to do for me on the side. I’m in my third year.
2) Are you a student volunteer? If so, what are you studying and does volunteering at the station help with your studies?
So I’m in computer science and I am a student. It doesn’t really go with my studies, but it’s kind of a nice break from my studies. I like to spend time prepping my shows and just, it gives me a really good opportunity to just step back from my studies and take a break.
3) Are you a community volunteer and how do you think volunteering at the station supports your engagement with the Kamloops community?
I’m technically a student volunteer, but I think it helps me. I’m new to Kamloops and volunteering at the station helps me learn about the community. I love to hear what’s going on in the community and yeah, it helps me know what’s going on, I guess.
4) hat is it about volunteering in general that appeals to you?
Just giving back. Campus radio is very unique. I think you really have a wide range of people you can reach and yeah, just giving back.
5) What other hobbies and interests do you have outside of doing a show on the campus/community radio?
I am a massive crocheter. I made a couple, trying to recall here, I made some stuffed animals, I make book covers, I’ve made a sweater. Yeah, I love to just work on little projects like that.
6) What is your show about and what will a listener hear when they tune into the show?
Yeah, so I, my main goal of the show is to uncover brand new music that I, brand new to me, it’s not all new music, but I like to go into the library here at CFBX and pull out new music that I’ve never heard before, or maybe I’ve heard of it, but it’s not something that I would listen to regularly. And just kind of also expose my audience to that because a lot of the time I’ll have a friend listen, they’ll be like, I’ve never heard that song before. And I’m like, yeah, isn’t it awesome? And you just get to explore the new music with me.
7) What makes your show unique? And why do you think listeners will be interested in your show?
I think it’s unique because there’s something new every week. I like to pull a lot from the new music we get from the library or into the library. And I also like to just kind of, you know, explore different genres. And it’s a lot of alt stuff. But yeah, it’s a pretty wide range from rock to folk to pop. It’s, we’ve got a lot going on there.
8) What does Campus Community Radio mean to you?
Yeah, it’s just, I guess, kind of the outreach that you have. I do live away from home. So it’s a great way for, you know, people I don’t get to talk to every day to hear my voice. You know, I also love to just share the music I’m listening to with the people around me. And it’s a really great way to do that.
9) What shows at CFBX do you like and listen to regularly?
Um, oh gosh, now I’m not gonna be able to remember any. Oh no. Oh no, I’m actually blanking. I’m not sure. It’s all good. Like, there’s just so many shows out there. There’s so many. I’m blanking on the names of them right now, though. I like our eclectic shows here at the station. They’re kind of similar to mine, and I like to kind of hear what everyone else is playing. You’re getting stuff that, like in my show, it’s a lot of stuff that I’ve never heard before in these other shows. And it’s a great way to kind of expand my music taste.
10) Name an artist that you discovered during your time at CFBX that you would like others to know about.
Yeah, there’s this band called Knitting. They’re an indie rock group, and I found them for my show, but I have definitely had them on repeat.
11) Is there a local musician that you would like people to pay more attention to? And why do you think they should?
I know I do play quite a few in my show, but I can’t really think of any off the top of my head right now. I know there is a lot of local music, and I try to shout it out in my shows as much as I can, but I have a terrible memory, and I can’t remember any right now. I know that there was a local artist that was on the playlist recently as well.
12) And do you enjoy attending live concerts?
Oh, I love concerts. I go to them a lot with my sister, and yeah, just the feeling of being in the music, it’s really unique. Just kind of the atmosphere, I think. It’s kind of a sound bath, almost. The music is just everywhere, and it’s a really cool experience. I’ve been to quite a few. One of my favourite bands that’s no longer a band, unfortunately, they’re The Regrettes. I saw them live a couple years ago, and that was a really cool show. It was a super small venue, and it was really nice. They sound like a very interesting band.
13) What do you hope to do with your show in the future?
Just keep exploring. There is so much music I haven’t even touched in that library, and I’m going to make sure that my listeners get to hear as much as possible. I think we’re going to keep up with the music. Maybe some different types of music in there. I’ve been kind of thinking we’ll lean it into more of a hard rock eventually, but right now we’re kind of more in the soft rock and pop kind of vibes, I guess.
