On April 2, 2001, CFBX, the campus/community radio station at Thompson Rivers University, signed on as an FM broadcaster after a year of closed-circuit broadcasting. Since then, CFBX has grown from a 5-Watt developmental licensed broadcaster to a 350-Watt station broadcasting city-wide.
CFBX is an entirely volunteer programmed radio station with 90 volunteers involved in help running and broadcasting the station. Our volunteers range in age fro 12 to 85, and over 400 volunteers have come through the doors of the station since 2001 to host shows or help out behind the scenes.
To celebrate our 25th anniversary, we have a number of events coming up over the summer.
First, we are currently gathering stories from current and past volunteers, as well as listeners, about their experiences at CFBX, which will be compiled into a radio series called Stories of House 8, House 8 being the building that has housed CFBX/Radio 8 since 1998. Once completed, the show will be broadcast at a regular time in our station’s programming line up.
Our annual record fair is scheduled for Saturday, June 6th at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, from 10 AM to 4 PM. We will be issuing a formal announcement about the fair once details are finalized.
Our second summer of Sound Waves Summer Camp is currently being organized for July and August, offering high school students a two week camp to learn the basics of radio broadcasting and interviewing for radio. Dates and more information will be announced soon.
Lastly, our annual spring volunteer drive begins on Friday. April 10th and runs til Friday, April 24th. This is a chance for community members and TRU students to get involved as volunteers at CFBX, as on air hosts or off air helpers. Anyone can volunteer and the station will provide all training.
If you are a listener to CFBX and would like to contribute a story about how CFBX has affected you or how you have enjoyed our programming, please email to radio@thex.ca.
