The 2025 edition of the Annual Seniors Picnic was held on August 29 at the east end of Riverside Park. The event was well attended. There were games, an aerobic class, chair yoga and of course, food. There were bottles of water, hot dogs with all the fixings, potato chips, and fruit for all. The tables were served by members of the City Council, our Member of Parliament and a few other helpers.

As I didn’t get there at the beginning, I may have missed some music. The music act that I heard was the iconic Kamloops Rube Band. After lunch was served they played a long set of music that included plenty of Dixeland and other genres of Jazz and some fun pop songs, too. The band leader and his mates do a bit of a vaudeville act throughout the performance with plenty of Dad jokes and some witty ones, too.

They generally explain the songs and how they fit into the eras when they were popular. Many of the crowd sang along and there was a bit of dancing, too. Favourite tunes were “Roll Out the Barrel,” “76 Trombones,” “Struttin’ With Maria” and “High Society.”

The Rubes, dressed in their ‘finest clothing,’ ended the performance with their version of Neil Diamond’s hit “Sweet Caroline.”

The weather was fine, the food and music were great. Our local seniors enjoyed themselves. You couldn’t ask for much more at the annual Seniors Picnic in Kamloops, BC.
