Hear Almost Anything Goes every Wednesday 5-6 PM on CFBX.
- Are you from Kamloops? If not, where are you from and how did you come to be in Kamloops?
Yes and no. I was born in New Westminster but moved to Kamloops at the age of four. I finished high school here then spent several years travelling and working abroad. Once back in Canada, I spent 10 years in Vancouver until the pandemic shook things up enough to lead me back to the Loops.
2. Are you a student volunteer? If so, what are you studying and does volunteering at the station help with your studies?
Yes, I’m doing a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in psychology. So far, volunteering has helped me develop new skills that compliment my studies. There’s no doubt that music and forming connections with others through storytelling is a form of therapy, and that happens to align perfectly with what I aim to accomplish with my degrees. The arts and
mental well-being share a close bond where creative expression fosters a holistic approach to feeling our best.
3. Are you a community volunteer? How do you think volunteering at the station supports your engagement with the Kamloops community?
Yes, as a volunteer at CFBX my engagement with the community of Kamloops is getting stronger and I feel more connected. Sharing events happening in and around the city, discovering talent and working with people that inspire each other supports this.
4. What is it about volunteering in general that appeals to you?
In general, volunteering is appealing because it allows me to be part of community of people with similar interests, it encourages personal development, and it adds purpose to my life.
5.What other hobbies and interests do you have outside of doing campus/community radio?
Outside of campus/ community radio, some hobbies that I enjoy are writing poetry, getting
outside in nature (paddle-boarding, hiking, getting out on my bike) photography (need to get a professional camera!) and practicing / teaching yoga, movement, and meditation.
6. What is your show about? What would a listener hear when they tune in?
Right now, my show Almost Anything Goes is an eclectic mix of music that ranges from electronic beats with jazz, funk-soul and Latin influences, classical – strings and piano, experimental, rock to folk music and sometimes tidbits of poetry. Listeners can tune in every Wednesday from 5PM-6PM.
7. What makes your show unique? Why do you think listeners are interested in your show?
What makes my show unique is that it is created by me. My own flare and personality come through the spaces between, the music itself and the poetry that I choose to share. I think listeners are interested in my show because its different!
8. What does campus/community radio mean to you?
Campus/ community radio means community. It means like-minded individuals coming together for the love of art.
9. What shows at CFBX do you like and listen to regularly? Why do you enjoy them?
When I have the time, I listen in as much as possible because there’s so many programs that I enjoy. Some of them include The New Fangled Whistle Test (Fridays 3-4 PM), The Cosmic Detective (Tuesdays Noon-1 PM), Democracy Now (Saturdays 9-10 AM), Storied Voices (Wednesdays 9-10 AM) and Kamloops Local and Live (Wednesdays 8-9 PM). Each of these shows are so diverse and offer something unique that I don’t hear being played anywhere else which is what I love the most.
10. Name an artist you discovered through your time at CFBX that you’d like others to know about.
It’s hard to pick one! An artist that I discovered through CFBX that people should check out is the bilingual quintet Mimosa out of Vancouver.
11. Is there a local musician that you would like people to pay more attention to? Why?
Tommy Carson is a local musician worth checking out, for sure. His music and live performances convey depth and soul that carry a personal message.
12.Do you enjoy attending live concerts? Why? Can you tell us about your favorite live concert that you’ve been to?
I do enjoy attending live concerts! They’re great because you get a feeling, an energy from the crowd that you only get live. It’s hard to pick one. I saw Florence and the Machine live at the Gorge Amphitheatre for Sasquatch Music Festival. She’s such a powerhouse! She owned that stage, dancing barefoot and her melodic voice sounds just as good live as it
does recorded. Her lyrics are raw and emotional. Her songwriting reveals a therapeutic process in which she sings about her struggles with mental health, addiction, sobriety, and relationships. Her performance was deeply moving,
13.What do you hope to do with your show in the future? What direction do you see your show moving?
In addition to continuing playing underplayed music, I’d like to incorporate, interviews and spoken word elements into my show. Maybe even switch gears completely to a talk show format.
