Classical Guitar Provides Some “Vibes on Victoria” Street

On Thursday June 13 musician Neil Brun appeared in the noon hour series Vibe on Victoria. He played an hour set of mostly pop and rock standards on his Spanish Almansa nylon string classical guitar.

For this instrumental guitar performance, Brun didn’t bring the charts and played from memory and freely improvised at times. It made for very cool takes of these well-known tunes. From his opening song, “Classical Gas,” through Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and on to “Greensleeves,” a song that was composed in 1580, Brun played an eclectic set of recognizable music that seemed to appeal to passerby shoppers and those that hung around to listen.

Brun is a well known electric bass guitar player who appears with a variety of cover bands around town, along with the occasional jazz show. During the Tears For Fears hit “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” he seemed to play both lead and rhythm guitar parts simultaneously, along with some hand slap percussion. While he made it appear effortless, it was still quite impressive.

There was a really nice moment. Victoria Street had its usual gridlock. A man must have been making the best of it and enjoying the tunes. He jumped out of his truck, ran across the street and placed some money in Brun’s guitar case. Then, he dashed back before the traffic moved on. It was a beautiful day, Victoria Street was busy and the entertainment was wonderful. There really was a vibe on Victoria!

The Vibe on Victoria series will continue with performances Wednesday-Friday from noon-1 PM until the end of August.
