Dancing the Night Away with the Apollo Suns

On Wednesday May 29 the Blue Grotto in Kamloops, BC hosted the Apollo Suns from Winnipeg. They are described as an instrumental psychedelic jazz rock band. They are this and more. The dance floor filled from the first blasts of the horn players until the last song was finished. In previous visits to the area, Apollo Suns have had more musicians in the band. Yet, the six appearing this night did not miss a beat.

While the Apollo Suns musicianship is great, you can’t miss the dancing, fun choreography and energy that the band displays on stage. The keyboard player climbed all over the stage during a wild keytar part. The trombone and horn players danced, jumped and moved about in a combination of impromptu and choreographed moves, as did the bass and guitar players. The Apollo Suns really do enjoy themselves and it is infectious!

The opening act was a local band called Carole. They played a mix of grunge and pop tunes.

The highlight was a cover of “Psycho Killer,” which was a hit for Talking Heads.

This Wednesday night show garnered a modest crowd, as is, unfortunately, per usual in Kamloops clubs. Yet, they danced, cheered and had lots of fun.

Apollo Suns are near the end of their most recent tour and will be in the area in early July for a number of concerts including a July 4 show as part of the Music in the Park series in Kamloops.
