Volunteer Profile – Carla Du Solier

Hear A Little Bit of Everything on Fridays 2-3 PM

Where are you from? How did you find Kamloops?

I’m not from this town. I’m originally from Mexico City. Raised near Mexico City. I wasn’t
admitted to University in Montreal, so my second choice was here in BC. It was either UBC
or TRU and in the end, I chose TRU.

What are you studying at TRU? Does volunteering with CFBX help with your studies?

I am studying International Business. I started volunteering here to support my friend. At the end, I never thought I would have a radio show. My friend decided not to join CFBX, but I did! I noticed how the radio station helped me develop skills. For example the research of artists and the research- like not to violate the rules and not play Billboard songs. Stuff like that is quite tricky. Your research skills actually become a little bit sharper so yeah also practising my English has being very nice, so yeah, I think you develop certain skills here for your future endeavours

You talked about having a great affection for radio, and entertainment & artist management work as well. Will this training help you?

Any type of job will help you. I think that this volunteering work it’s actually very
straightforward which helps me to actually follow more stuff to the exact line and just be
straightforward. I learned a lot of new vocabulary that I didn’t even know existed. This
actually helps you understand how entertainment in another country actually works and if at some point I do become a manager or agent I really need to be fluid and adapt quickly to that entertainment industry of, whichever country. I think that the training here actually helps you develop those skills -those things. You can actually quickly grasp the main idea and take action right away so you don’t spend time and you just go forward like right away so yeah it’s good.

I bumped into an old friend of mine. I never thought that I would see him again and welcome. We started talking and we have a really good friendship now. I also noticed how I have become a little bit more extroverted and confident so that’s also good. I can say that now I know that there are people out there willing to help me whether they’re not into international business or anything they’re still part of the community I’m here which is
Kamloops and TRU at the same time which means that if I need help I can actually reach out to the people I work with volunteering and somebody will actually help me. so it’s nice. With humans, everything has to do with connections. So when you’re here at CFBX , the
environment actually helps you to adapt and to connect with different people with different nationalities. This helps you actually develop like the relationship skills you need in life in general.

What other hobbies and interests do you have?

I listen to a lot of music so that’s been helpful here. I love reading. I really enjoy a nice book
with a nice cup of tea. If I’m not reading I’m listening to music, if not I’m talking to my friends. I don’t like to do nothing– I’m always doing something. Going for walks, reading–my favourite hobbies-listening to music or reading -definitely!

Who are some of your favourite authors?

When I was able to read, I started with JK Rowling and Harry Potter. My grandmother was a
big fan of Stephen King,so I became a fan because of her. I like to read religious
biographies-people like for example The Pope. I want to read an autobiography of Saint Rita da Cascia, who is a saint for Catholic people. I like those types of books. I really enjoyed reading reports about animals in National Geographic. I’m a little bit broad in my reading but if I have to choose like an author would be JK Rowling or Stephen King

What is your show about?

Everything! I wanted a show to actually share lot of singers and a lot of genres and that I
really enjoy and they’re very underrated so my show you can listen to Country you can listen to pop you can listen to rock you can also listen to old time Mariachi. I try to give my
audience a little bit of everything, like the title says. For example, one of the people who
listens to my show said that he listened to one of my shows where I played Il Volo -which is
the popular Trio- so pop and Opera but also Spanish. He really thought that he wouldn’t
enjoy it, but he’s really into that music now! So, I think that my show gives you a try of every country, every genre.

What makes A Little Bit Of Everything unique?

I think less Canadian content -first of all. I think that has become my stamp of my show. My family is listening back home and one of them is not very fluent in English. Still, I want them to feel a part of the show so I tend to speak Spanish from time to time. I have become like this girl who speaks Spanglish in her own show. A Lot of latinos friends here have said that it’s very unique so I think that that makes me stand out. Because time and time you will listen to me speak Spanish–it will wear you out (laughter) but I think it makes it a little bit unique!

What does Campus & Community radio mean to you?

At the beginning, it would just be volunteer work , but now I truly think it’s a family Whether we don’t talk a lot, it doesn’t matter. You are here 3 hours a week-which means you have to talk to people. I’ve met one of my closest friends here, so this actually became my home, a kind of family now. A place where I can be myself, which is very important so yeah it has become that.

What shows do you like and listen to regularly? Why do you enjoy them?

Map It! (Mondays 10-11 AM) is really fun. It’s a great show to hear. I would not be able to actually listen to many shows because of my schedule in school but I would tune in for a couple of minutes and then turn out. So I didn’t know exactly would show I was listening to but now after my show there’s The New Fangled Whistle Test (Fridays 3-4 PM) so I listen to that. Yeah! I have more time now, so I will be able to actually listen to more shows.

Is there a local musician that you like would like people to pay more attention to

Aron K. He’s one of my close friends. He has his own Spotify account where he uploads his
own music. He is very talented and I have played two of his songs during my show. Not just because he is my friend. His lyrics are very very real so it’s not something like other songs they have this powerful meaning behind the song. Aaron has two songs that I really like, Insecurities. It actually talks about these feelings about when it comes to a relationship or a friendship that you become a little bit insecure and he tells like that story in the lyrics in the form of a song which is very unique. His lyrics are very powerful so that’s cool- yeah! I think we need to support local talent and by local it doesn’t mean only Kamloops – it means the International Community we have in campus.I think there should be a course within the University or an activity within the radio to help students who don’t get on the playlist or don’t have enough songs to actually show so that way people can actually listen to it. We should support our community no matter their nationality

Do you enjoy attending live concerts?

Ooooh – Back home, my money would just go to two things- artist merch & concerts!
(laughter). That would be all! The last concert I was in was 2019 – it was my favourite
Korean band- NCT. I’ve been to Bruno Mars concert before. There was one festival I went to with Avicii went to it I think– it was a Kelowna event. I went to Sun Mi, which was truly
amazing- one of the best! I wanted to go to the Corey Kent one in the states but I flew that
day so I couldn’t actually make it. I’ve been trying to go down to Seattle for a couple of
concerts. Hopefully I can actually go back to concerting soon.

How do you see your show evolving?

It will become not only a one day show, probably at least two days a week. 1 hour is not
enough to actually show up so it would be cool if my show actually gets into two days per
week and probably has more songs. I can do it two times a week so people can really enjoy
International songs. More time would be great!
