Volunteer Profile – Deiveek Agarwal

Check out Deiveek’s new show, Map-It! every Monday, 1-2 PM.

1.Are you from Kamloops? If not, where are you from and how did you come to be in Kamloops?

I’m from a small city called Guwahati in Assam province of eastern India. Closer to China and Myanmar than to mainland India! I originally had no plan to go abroad but my brother was going to the UK to do his master’s degree and my parents said “why don’t you try as well?” I was interested in Canada and Kamloops looked like a good school in a great location. The tuition fee in Kamloops was also quite good compared to other cities.

2.Are you a student volunteer? If so, what are you studying and does volunteering at the station help with your studies?

I came to Kamloops in 2021 and was originally enrolled in the Business program, but after a few months I changed to Communications with a major in Public Relations. CFBX has been very helpful towards my studies, especially after I started my own show in September 2022. I was initially an off-air volunteer but communication is a major part of doing radio show, plus I interact with a lot of people which connects to public relations.

3.Are you a community volunteer? How do you think volunteering at the station supports your engagement with the Kamloops community?

When I was first here, I volunteered with the Kamloops Heritage Railway but they had to shut down because of some problems with the City. I volunteer my time as a photographer and have collected photos for various events like the Special Olympics When I was looking for volunteer opportunities I was also looking at the Overlander (long term care) but chose CFBX because of my degree. I think all of these things provide opportunities to interact with the community.

4.What is it about volunteering in general that appeals to you?

I am in a new place here and I want to explore and experience the community and see how I can contribute. I am also a young person and these experience add to my CV.

5.What other hobbies and interests do you have outside of doing campus/community radio?

I am a freelance photographer, as I mentioned previously, and recently I started working for the Omega Student Newspaper since it started operating again. I am handling their social media which connects well to my major.

6.What is your show about? What would a listener hear when they tune in?

My first show was called Downtime with Dev and I felt Thursday evening was was a good slot to connect with an audience who was possibly tired and looking forward to the weekend. I feel I have good taste in music from a wide range of genres and Downtime with Dev was my down time and the audience could relax with me. This year I started a new show called Map-It! where I explore the music of a different country each week.

7.What makes your show unique? Why do you think listeners are interested in your show?

With Map-It!, I’m interested in exploring the music that is unique to each country and trying to find the newer music that still keeps the flavour of the traditional music. The name of the show stands for Music And Places.

8.What does campus/community radio mean to you?

I can answer this with a comparison to commercial radio. Campus/community radio is constantly original, unlike commercial radio which plays the same music in repeating cycles and has the same voices with the same advertisements. CFBX allows each programmer to promote under-exposed music and create their own content. I find that good music can be popular but “commercial pop” music doesn’t have to actually be good.

9.What shows at CFBX do you like and listen to regularly? Why do you enjoy them?

I listen to several. I like to discover different types of great music and I especially like Hello I’m Indie at 8pm on Thursdays. I also like the creativity on the The Sink. Neil’s show Hiway 61 is inspiring because it is to well structured. Ska on The X with Dean is a great show too.

10.Name an artist you discovered through your time at CFBX that you’d like others to know about.

I discovered a band called Good Kid (Toronto) and really love them. I went back to discover all their albums and I like how all the names are kind of generic but the music is so good.

11.Is there a local musician that you would like people to pay more attention to? Why?

I know I’ve played local music on my show but I don’t really know many local musicians. There is a guy named Gerry Macks from Kamloops who was also a programmer at CFBX at one time. He even reached out to me on Facebook after I played his music one show, which I really appreciated.

12.Do you enjoy attending live concerts? Why? Can you tell us about your favorite live concert that you’ve been to?

I have been to only one, which was the Contact Music Festival in Vancouver. I went there representing CFBX. It was mostly an EDM (electronic dance) concert and I remember the headliner was The Chainsmokers. There was also another band I liked called Loud Luxury. Unfortunately I could only stay for part of the festival because I was so busy.

13.What do you hope to do with your show in the future? What direction do you see your show
moving?

Well I just started my new show and I’m not sure about any evolution quite yet but I really like the idea I’m going with. For me, I like to know about different cultures and other places. I like to learn about everything. If I am inspired so will my audience be inspired.
