On August 19 Celeigh Cardinal from Edmonton performed at Music in the Park in Riverside Park before a large audience. After weeks of smoke, the blue skies, fluffy clouds and the sun returned to Kamloops. Cardinal is a Canadian folk singer-songwriter. She won the Juno Award for Indigenous Music Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2020 for her album Stories from a Downtown Apartment. She has won numerous other Western Canadian Music Awards and Edmonton Music Awards. She started her performance by saying “I hope you like sad songs.” She often told the stories behind the songs and not all were sad, but she showed she can convey plenty of emotion with her amazing, soulful voice. Celeigh Cardinal sang and played acoustic guitar. She shared the stage with two very talented musicians. guitarist Brayden Treble and Brennan Cameron who played keyboards and mandolin.
Both provided great backing vocals, as well. The songs performed included Nathaniel, I Don’t Want to Know You Anymore, The Devil is Blue-Eyed Man and Wandering River.
She covered The Beatles Don’t Let Me Down, and Take It to the Limit by The Eagles. They also did a great job on Dream a Little Dream of Me, which is a classic from the 1930s that The Mommas and Poppas had a hit with in the 60s. Each song was followed by heavy applause. Cardinal’s next stop was Summerland.
