Daniel Heslop is an accomplished pianist/keyboard player. These musicians are in great demand on the Kamloops music scene, so he keeps fairly busy. The last time that I saw him perform was with the Angie Heinze Band, rocking in the New Year at the Blue Grotto. On Saturday February 28th I caught up with him at Atlas Steak + Fish in the Cascades Casino. Here, the atmosphere is a little more formal, but thankfully not stuffy. Heslop was performing solo on their beautiful piano. The volume is kept to a serene level, but still loud enough to create a nice musical atmosphere.
Heslop entertained diners with music from a variety of genres including pop, rock, movie soundtracks and generally fun tunes. His selections included Dance Monkey, Bohemian Rhapsody, Into the Unknown from Frozen 2 and as he told me, “Piano Man … because you kind of have to.” Heslop seems to have a nice rapport with staff and customers and his music adds to the ambiance in this beautiful restaurant.
He is also a music teacher. Fun fact: Heslop is an accomplished ball hockey goalie and has great knowledge of NHL goaltenders and their styles, going back to Jacques Plante’s days. Atlas Steak + Fish has a piano player from 6 to 9 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.
