Chapter Six starts with a re-interpretation of the crucifixion – which deeply resonated with me. I’ve never been able to understand how a loving God would torture and kill off his most advanced, in order to pre-pay for all the sins of everyone else, yet to be born. Instead, the Course says that the crucifixion was a demonstration of how we are love, and that what happens to the body does not matter.
It leads from there into a deeper look at projection vs. extension, and then deeper into the role of the Holy Spirit. It’s made very clear that we are to “Teach only love, for that is what you are.”
The role of the ego is further demonstrated in Robert Perry’s (editor of the Circle of Atonement edition of the Course) in his notes on Chapter 6, Section 5. He suggests that we are riding a centaur – the mythical half man/half horse. The man of the centaur is the ego; the horse is the body. The real you – the one that is love – is riding the centaur but has been convinced by the ego that you are the centaur.
