Five Alarm Funk opened their latest tour at the Blue Grotto before a sold-out crowd on Wednesday February 21st. They played a number of sweltering sets of funk-laced music that kept their adoring audience on the dance floor all night.
The band consists of three percussion players up front and the back line-up consists of a stellar horn section and a rhythm/lead section of guitars. They played selections from their extensive catalogue including tracks from their latest album Sweat. And sweat they did.
Two of the three percussionists shed clothes as the Grotto heated up and percussionist/vocalist Ricki Valentine entertained the crowd with numerous costume and hat changes, along with a number of different props.
Most stayed until the show was over and band members hung out at the merchandise table meeting and greeting many of their fans. Five Alarm Funk was recently nominated for a Juno Award in The Instrumental Album of the Year category. To celebrate they opened their tour in Kamloops and they provided an evening of glorious funk and visual delights. They warmed up the town on a cold, wintery night.
